Tough week for the WL Chamber of Commerce. First the misstep by KCTV 5 regarding their assertion that WL was infected by zebra mussels, followed by comments by Chamber spokespeople Rick Neece and Hank Nussbeck that really didn't clarify the issue, other than Neece's "drain the lake" comment.
Then the Star runs the double your taxes @ WL piece, without the Chamber weighing in...Assessor Christian had his way with us, referring to the uproar @WL...and dismissing it as "noise".
And finally the apology by the TV 5 reporter on the inaccuracy of her comments...oops. All in all we've had better weeks for PR...not exactly the stuff that makes people hunt for listings in WL. At least they didn't drag out the "litigation lake" and "goose killers" allegations.
Bonyen Lee's (TV5) response to her broadcast:
I wanted to touch base with you about the zebra mussels story. I am the anchor that reported that story inaccurately. My deepest apologies. As an anchor, I always make sure to re-write scripts in my own tone - however, my intention is to never change the meaning or facts in the story. That day, I read the existing script and misinterpreted the story. We were telling folks not to take their boats to other lakes if they had been in Weatherby Lake in order to prevent spreading of zebra mussels. I took that as - boaters pose a risk to other waterways if they had been in Weatherby lake waters because of a zebra mussel problem. We did air a correction on the story Monday at 5 and we plan to air another correction this weekend in my morning show for any viewers who might only catch the weekend news. Please know that I strive for accuracy and truth in my reporting and in this instance, I made an honest mistake. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other concerns.

Woopsie daisey. Liberal media.
I was not terribly excited to see all the "news" about zebra mussels at Weatherby Lake on tv. Was this a spur of the moment interview?
Abolish the WLIC.
Weatherby Lake will never be a united integrated community as long as this dysfunctional division exists.
Abolish the WLIC and let the terrible legacy of litigation lake dissolve into the past where it belongs.
Liberal media who were used by the "litgation lake " Republican and his cohorts
The suprising truth about liesis people often believe them
You name it we have lost the ability to think for ourselves instead we get "facts" from carnival barkers who make millions on the slow witted calling the lamestream media the problem
The real problem is that we have become doormats
Refer to the first paragraph
These little ducks are cute and they eat zebra mussels!

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider that wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her. She swallowed the spider to catch the fly..but I dunno why she swallowed the fly.

I hope the Zebra Mussel Test is going to be like this one.

Some of the alternate answers are awesome!
Google
"Zebra Mussels larvae study waterfowl feathers feet"
Larvae also attach to crayfish and turtles and inside the gills of fish.
I do appreciate the concern and caution about zebra mussels but seriously? Nothing wrong with being careful but further study should be done before changing so many rules and procedures
I still haven't seen any real proof that they can be spread by a trailered boat or fishing gear. The pictures of the encrusted boats are all scary and stuff but those are all dryed out and DEAD! You could launch those boats and it would not hurt the lake one bit.
It takes certain climate, water, oxygen and nutrient conditions for them to become invasive and they are a cold water species. There are reports of them in the stretch of Missouri River upstream between SD and NB, and none visible in the parks around here, they have had years to migrate/float down stream. For that matter, they have had years to invade WL.
A lot of the scary photos being passed around of them covering beaches, etc. are from cold climates - great lakes. They would never cover sand beach like this because 86 degree water kills them - 100 percent dead. They will die in 80 degree water, it just takes longer.
They also die when they dry out. If fishing gear can spread them then it is already lost because birds will bring them here in their wet feathers and larvae attached to their webbed feet.
Have a family member that had property at Lake Ozarks and they are in that lake but not a visible problem for property owners, they were only a problem for water intakes, pumps and such where there is fast moving aerated/oxygenated water with a lot of nutrients flowing and even then, they were a very limited problem. When he heard about the stuff we were doing, he said something to the effect of "why would they even worry about zebra mussels?, they just clog pipes"
They attach on docks, boats, etc precisely because there is water sloshing around with lots of oxygen, nutrients, etc. - and something good to attach to in the oxygen rich water.
Think about how quick the critters die in an aquarium if the aerator conks out or the food runs out or the water gets too hot.
Instead of plates, should make a sampler that draws water and air through a pipe and provides a good substrate for them to attach and make absolutely sure they are not already in the lake from something like dredging. Also could ask people to check the pump intakes for their yard sprinkler pumps - to see if they are already in the lake. They could already be here and the climate or a predator could be limiting their growth rate. No one was checking the dredge or anything else for them. Is the dreging company going to dedicate his dredge equipment to the lake? Is the fish stocking going to dedicate their equipment to the lake? Seriously?!
I have also seen people passing around scary pictures from completely different climates to get people worried and worked up. Some of the pictures I have seen are not even zebra mussels but salt-water barnacles, salt water mussels, snails, and other species.
After 9/11, we spent trillions of dollars on security and let fear rule our actions and basically let the terrorists accomplish their goals because we changed our entire way of life and nearly bankrupted ourselves because of fear and hysteria.
Just think of all the manpower devoted to fighting war on terror that could be rebuilding our infrastructure or starting new factories, farms and businesses instead of making us take off our shoes at the airport. Did the terrorists accomplish their goals? I think it was the whole point.
It would have been far more prudent if they would have just made the plane cockpit doors stronger and gave the pilots tazers and not acted out of fear. We have all this security now and there is almost no way a hijacking could even happen. The security is almost a non-issue - The passengers would not let it happen again on any plane.
So we are going to let something that is just a 'possible' threat change so much at the lake?
There are a lakes we could observe like Smithville and Lotawana to moderate our actions based on what happens there.
