The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
July 6
Alderman Clark delivered his report from the Ad Hoc Google Fiber Committee. The recommendation was official contact with Google Fiber by the Mayor as soon as possible to demonstrate interest in GF and determine the opportunity. It was noted by the Mayor that both Verizon and ATT were developing high speed internet as well. Alderman Stevenson asked George if there was capacity on the current power poles to accommodate GF, George felt there is capacity.
Mayor Botbyl said he would work with the City Attorney to send a letter to GF regarding our intentions.
Mary Florence sent this to Committee members yesterday...

This is a very positive direction for our city. I hope Mayor Botbyl continues to support it.
343-Get a grip. The Mayor having the City Attorney send a letter doesn't cut it. HE needs to find out who the top person for Google is in Kansas City and contact this person and set up a meeting. We have to go after them. I don't believe what the Mayor is doing shows that he is really supporting it. We MUST be aggressive. Everyone needs to continue to contact the Mayor and keep on the pressure.
8:04, Agreed. Recently I commented "WL is falling behind the times... "it'll overload our infrastructure" said the last mayor...Mr Botbyl's friend. Its a %#@kN fiber optic cable tagged onto our poles and the equip goes in the home, my lord." I DO know whom to contact at Google and I will send an anon letter to Mr. Botbyl directing him (and subsequently add it to the un published website / work that is my magnum opus 'told you so'). Mrs. Florence is an Angel and we will all have her to thank if and when. The letter will also be sent to her. Perhaps Mr. Moratz deserves a tip of the hat as well!. -Anon 9:27
“It was noted by the Mayor that both Verizon and AT&T were developing high speed internet as well.”
There is a point missed here. It’s not all about high speed internet. More competition means prices go down and service goes up. Having Google Fiber as leverage will make a difference in everyone’s pocketbook.
Didn't realize that the new Mayor is the Chief Information Officer at VFW National Headquarters. Maybe he has some professional experience/reason not to like Google Fiber?
759 - My understanding is the Google Fiber installation around the VFW building was not completed to his satisfaction. Not a good enough reason to deny the citizens of this community the opportunity for this great service. We works for us, we don't work for him.
