Yes, the monuments are impressive. Did we need them?
I support a very needy charity which literally uses every penny I give to the upmost benefit.
So, let’s see, shall I redirect our monies from such a charity and give to the sign fund?
Everyone should ask themselves: What do you truly think is important?
Everyone has their charities, as do I. On first read I might agree with you. Then I think about what our city would look like if we never invested in parks, maintenance, C-point renovations, and entrance monuments. Our home values depend on the ability to attract people to live here. Certainly there isn't a need for ostentatious signs and monuments but these look well done yet not obnoxiously overdone.
So when you ask yourself if we need them, think of what would happen if we didn't do anything. And, it is up to each of us if we want to or can afford to donate to the project. I will still agree if I can only choose one over the other I will and do choose the charity. But some of us have it in our means to do both.
Just a comment, not an attack.
Action? Agree, we need to present the city in a positive light for our home values. BUT, if there was one iota of sense in this plan, preserving our home values would not be dependent on Eastside and Blair Road entrance.
From what I'm seeing happening at the "premiere" entrance, we could have added nice bronze placards to the existing entrances and we would be $200K in the plus. Eastside and City Hall looks like a bowling alley with gutter guards ....and practically the same as the previous entrances. Can't wait to see the cost of tuck-pointing that monstrosity six years from now.
All of this was done on the down low. Now they are back peddling to gain community support because Barry and Eastside is near completion and instead of accepting their mistake, they are refusing to correct on the platitudes of "it's all donations"!
Shame on the city for ignoring good infrastructure planning and cow-towing to a few.

You make a good point 1:53, communities do need to upgrade periodically. But parks, maintenance, and the C-point renovations are not in the same category as those entrance monuments. C-point was in sad shape and needed renovation. There is absolutely no doubt present day C-point is an incredible plus to our municipal. Our parks are pure recreation for our community. If I were buying/coming into this community, with those amenities, it would be a positive consideration. I wouldn’t be looking at the signs to help make a buying decision.
So far the city hall sign looks ridiculous. I read in this blog that one of the reasons for this bowling alley sign was to slow traffic down when coming into Weatherby. They must have been grasping at straws to justify their decision. Going from 30 mph to 25 mph? Come on, we really needed a $125,000 sign to slow us down 5 mph. We’re not idiots.
City Hall sign will either grow on people or became the butt of a joke for years to come.
