The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
October 1
Just when you thought the streets were safe...
The small group of folks who are looking to grant access for golf carts on city streets reappeared to petition their cause to the BOA. You might recall this was vetted thoroughly (in my opinion, beyond what was necessary) with the result leaving the city code intact and not allowing them on city streets.
They tried a number of tactics including their incorrect reading of both the current city code and revised state statutes. Both the Chief and the City Attorney advised them their interpretation was not correct. Other points the group gave for consideration of an ordinance were:
*There are probably 20 or so golf carts (average cost $4,000) which is forcing the owners the owners to keep their carts garaged...a hardship.
*They pose no more safety concerns than bikes, so if carts are banned why not bikes?
*There are other communities who allow carts, Parkville, etc.
The only alderman to really challenge the group was Botbyl who countered with statistics regarding the safety, or not, of golf carts. One interesting stat was the number of rollover accidents/injuries in carts.
Seeing no warm fuzzies from the Mayor or BOA, the group asked for a suspension of the ordinance which disallows golf carts (actually it doesn't call out carts, it defines motor vehicles). City Attorney John pointed out because it was not on the agenda, a vote could not be taken.
Alderman Clark, seconded by Finn suggested the issue be placed on the agenda next month. Hopefully Clark's tactic is to get the issue to a vote and dismiss what is becoming a rather frivolous waste of time for the City...in my opinion.

1. Slip by the barrier at C-Point without having to pay that one time rental fee for the barrier lifter.
2. Give the police something to do when your golf cart battery runs out of power and the police have to tow you home.
3. Instead of boats linking up to party - have golf cart link parties!
4. Pull out in front of your obnoxious neighbor’s car and slow him or her down all the way on Eastside.
5. Doesn’t cost as much as a car for your underage children to crash it.
6. We all look forward to St Pat’s parade and 4th of July boat parades. New category would be golf cart parades. Yippee!!
7. Can sneak up on friends, family, and foes houses or gatherings without them knowing.
8. Golf car races! Create revenue for Weatherby Lake - paid admissions to golf cart races – invite any and all golf cart participating communities!
9. Have Guinness Book of World Records competition to see how many people we can fit on a golf cart.
10. Can park anywhere in our city parks or WLIC access areas. Drive right up to that tennis or basketball court or playground.
The possibilities are endless!!!
