Disconnect-Waiting For Google Fiber

Today's KC Star, page A5.

"Google has decided to sell its TV subscriptions and ultrafast broadband connections in south Kansas City, Grandview and Raytown..."

"The firm aims to keep down construction costs by selling hookups only in areas where demand justifies the company's investment."

Where has the Mayor and BOA been the last two years? Asleep at the wheel. Despite substantial inquiries from citizens, especially in the past year, Jerry's response has been, "we needed to wait". That is from an email response sent yesterday by Bos to Pete Pierce and others in regards to the status of GF here. Jerry erroneously states all the current subscribers are in "Kansas City" with the exception of "Chapel Woods". Of course you know otherwise if you read the Star, access the GF web site...or heaven forbid follow this blog. The Mayor and BOA spent enormous amounts of time this past year discussing and deliberating about golf carts on City streets, GF not.

As noted previously, lame duck Bos appointed Alderman Clark to head up a GF Committee, and as he notes in his email to Pierce, "I'm sailing of(f) into the sunset, remember".

Indeed.

I am willing to give Botbyl a chance but I am beginning to wonder. Bos sent a postcard supporting Botbyl just before the election, mentioning Botbyl will provide 24 hour police service, keep city hall open monday through friday and maintain the community center...were those even issues? He mentions Botbyl is "in tune with our residents". Based on the postings of this blog regarding Google Fiber, I don't think either of them, Bos or Botbyl, are.

Elections have consequences. We get the government we deserve.

IMHO, given the situation and the opportunity to help the new guard understand the interest in GF, I would suggest we start a campaign to educate all of the residents of the lake and find out where they stand on the issue - a petition if you will. My guess is, a lot of folks don't understand what a service quality improvement and price reduction it is.

I'v got an idea! Let's not give them boat stickers until they have taken a class on Google Fiber.... :)

Steve, access and communication within the community is limited. The City web site needs serious attention. The privately owned Weatherby Lake Living is chatty, but doesn't serve the purpose of great communication...I don't know how many readers it has and it is monthly at best. Mayoral candidate York proposed doing a blog if elected, possibly Botbyl would consider as part of an upgraded City web site. The City and WLIC both have email lists, if a merge of the two were possible it might cover most of the residents...otherwise good old snail mail is an option, albeit $$$.

I'm not sure I understand the KC Star article. People do have Google Fiber north of the river. Friends have it - they live off Waukomis Drive and relatives tell me their area is getting it - they live north of Barry between I-29 and 169.
