A Little Egg with your Sausage

Finishing up on the Special Nuisance Board Meeting on Monday, topics discussed included:
  • Dead and fallen trees
  • Noise related to home businesses
  • Smoke propagated by fire pits
  • Big lights on homes that disturb neighbors

Despite the more than two hour discussion of the current ordinance dealing with nuisances, apparently the only change moving forward will be the 8" maximum length of grass (although not mentioned, I believe this includes weeds as well). This will apply to developed property as well as undeveloped property that has been mowed.

If this board is really ambitious, a comprehensive review of the City Codes, in my opinion, is in order. It has been a number of years since the last revision. My bet is it won't happen or even worse another committee will be formed. A little egg with that sausage, mister? As Emily Littela used to say, "Never mind".

Update: Alderman Hoy sent out her notes from the Nuisance meeting last night @ 10:29, subject "BOA meeting last night". As my astute blogites know, the meeting was held Monday afternoon at 1:30. Absent from her notes was the recommended height change on grass. Maybe they have changed their mind?

Next bloggings to include: Update on Barry Road, The Meter is Running Update, Get Your Trash Picked Up for Free, RoundUp on Octoberfest/Recycling, Sonoma Ridge Development Heating Up, November Election.

Will the next nuisance meeting be held at a time when our community can attend? What businesses are causing noise at our lake? In researching the adjoining cities - Parkville, Gladstone, Platte City, Platte Woods, Kansas City - their noise ordinance restrictions times are from 7:00PM-10:00PM to 7:00AM. In other words, allowed times are 7AM in the morning to 7PM to 10PM at night. Some dictate limits on the decimals during the day. In fact the majority cities in America start at 7:00AM and end in the evening. Are there truly businesses causing excessive noise all night long or do we have someone who has a problem with one particular business? Or is it the occasionally party on the lake that lasts until early hours of the morning and this is the back door way to addressing it? Let's hope we don't end up with a retirement community noise restriction where folks like to sleep to 10AM, don't want their afternoon naps disturbed or go to bed before the sun goes down. This is a hard working community where working-age-people are up early in the morning and work into the evening. As for big lights on houses. Let's hope this doesn't restrict people who need them for security purposes or use them to light their driveways/pathways .Sure would like to see how the city is going to defend an ordinance when someone is using it for security purposes. Somewhere someone at the lake was having an overwhelming problem with smoke from a neighbor's fire pit. Let's hope that lousy neighbor doesn't cost others who do not assault their neighbors house or yard with their smoke and responsibly use their fire pits/grills.

Many years ago our elderly neighbors had a glaring bare light which blanketed our bedroom at night with its ugly glow. I asked our neighbor about it and she said it made them feel safe. What could I say. Our neighbors have passed away and the light is now gone. I miss them more than that light. Some homes have the street lights, some homes create their own protection. The board should explain the purpose for revising nuisances, what problems are occurring and why the need for revision. Looks like there was the board (of 5) and two attending the meeting. This is not an "open process".

Apparently still waters run deep. I am having difficulty understanding the need for a "special" meeting to address the issues discussed. This could not wait for a regular BOA meeting? I find that hard to believe. There is a much deeper issue here and it is more than a nuisance. If the BOA can call a special meeting for something so small in inconsequential, how are they going to behave on the big issues? More secret ... I mean "special" meetings?

I also would like to know what business at the lake is causing so much noise. Sounds like a smokescreen for something else. I have a neighbor who works two jobs. Sometimes he mows late in the evening. Only time he can get to it. As someone else said, is this a back door to other motives.

Could everyone who accesses this internet site get the word out to their neighbors and friends at the lake and in turn their neighbors and friends and let them know about Mike Moratz's blog. The more people who know about what is going on in our community and city council, the better represented and informed we will be.
