WLL has an article in the issue "Making An Entrance" (p.7) describing efforts to date to replace entrance monuments in the City. The monuments located on Barry Road had to be removed because of the widening project. KCMO has "contributed" $50,000 for the relocation/replacement of the five monuments. You might recall there was a fund raiser in October...Octoberfest, to raise money to support a redo. I'm not aware of any financials being reported (possibly @ Dec BOA which I did not attend). Here are the numbers, I'm hoping there is an update at tonight's BOA.
Octoberfest Revenue:$1614
Donations:$1315
Expenses:$671.07
Current Balance:$2257.93
Based on the projections of money needed I have heard, there is a severe shortfall in funding so far. Priorities in the City? I wonder where monuments fall...well maybe stand is a better word.

Mayor Bos made statment in a previous WL newletter there is an overwhelming support of the new entrance signs. Shows Mayor Bos is out of touch and truely does not know what is important to the people at WL.
Problem is, if so many people are against the entrance signs - where are they? Why aren't they showing up at BOA meetings to voice their concern? Why aren't they calling their alderpersons or the mayor? If the majority of people truly are against any entrance signs then they need to voice their concern. Is it really a majority or just a few grumblers? Makes ya wonder....
I think the problem is nobody really knows what most people think. Tony White says the folks who turned out for Octoberfest indicates support. The turnout was relatively light, the financial support meager. The adhoc group that been involved lately with the idea is favorable, it is a stretch to say they represent a majority of the tax payers. The fact is, we don't know, yet we are well on the road to doing it. There has never been a formal presentation by the adhoc committee/now formal committee to the BOA...even last Tuesday night. Marge made some comments, in response to a question I posed to the Mayor/Board. Jim Miller, who is the Chair of the committee was not at the BOA meeting.
What is the sudden rush? Proposed constrution of the monuments begins this year...before projected completion of Barry Road. Anybody find that odd?
Stay tuned for a coming post on what to expect to come out of your pocket in 2009 from WLIC and the City.
It is my understanding that the money for the entrance monuments will not come from our taxes. Instead it will come from those who support it and want to donate towards it. In other words, if you do not support it, you are entitled to not give to it. What is the problem?
The problem is, we have a council with warped priorities. You have a Mayor and BOA pushing entrance signs instead of much needed police dept and road upgrades. People are kidding themselves if they don't think we are going to have a very tough financial next few years. It is stupid to be focused on anything but the necessities at the moment. The $400,000 is a warped unrealistic estimate and expectation contary to the present ecomony. But you're right, if some people want signs instead of roads, who are we to tell them how to spend their money. Just as long as those who don't want them aren't bombarded with solicitations.
With all those people on the sign committee, surely they can come up with solid, long lasting entrance signs at a fraction of the proposed cost of $400,000. If it were our own money and house, wouldn't we all be looking at the best practical solution? I don't think there is a hard creative solution to this.

I dont care about the entrances but I do care about the Peret Property Dam
Do I see work starting on that much needed asset?
You do indeed...If the weather permits and I can break away, I'd like to take some pics...you can see the activity form 152.
Mike, What exactly is going to be done with the Peret Property?
I don't know exactly, if a board member wants to weigh in that would be great. Here is my understanding...a dam is being built to control the creek and act as a siltation barrier, much needed in my opinion. The part of the property not being used for eroision/siltation control could be sold to a developer, projections are it could sell for more than we paid. I have not gone to any meetings lately so this is conjecture on my part
wlic is meeting monday Jan 19. try to attend if you can and ask questions. best way to find out whats going on.
