WL Snubbed

Don't know how it is possible WL got overlooked in the designation as a "cool small town"  Could it be WL just doesn't have a social media presence (See Dilbert  today) needed to draw attention to WL?  Monuments aside, what draws attention to our fair burg?  Maybe we need folks to "Like" us.

When someone asks where we live, I can’t tell you how many times the response is “oh, you live at the litigation lake”. Right or wrong, Weatherby Lake (or should I say WLIC), flat out has a bad name for suing their citizens and entities around them. Has it really sunk in how the picnic table fiasco appeared to the outside world? I blame the WLIC because they pride themselves in being uncompromising. We don’t come across as a nice place to live.

Several years ago, a letter was sent to Mayor Kendrick from some of our leading citizens:
(Arms, Moratz, Pierce, Knop, Ohlhausen, Welch, Whipple)

Excerpts:
“The Platte County Dispatch and The Kansas City Star Northland Neighborhood news have recently carried articles that are very derogatory of the excellent community that we live in. The articles go into great detail about the internal affairs of the Weatherby Lake Improvement Company, a private corporation.

“If these articles continue, property values will become depressed and quality people who would otherwise move here and become a contributing part of the community will choose to live elsewhere. In addition to the loss of social base, the lowered property values will depress the tax base of the city and county.”

The point is nothing has changed. It has been years and years of this. Granted, the conflict between WLIC and the City isn’t as it was back then, but there is still continued conflict in one form or another. Fact is the WLIC or generally called “Weatherby Lake” has a lousy track record.

Why would people want to live in a place with our reputed character?

We do believe people have trouble selling their homes because of the Weatherby Lake name.

Many cities have departments with the sole purpose in promoting their community. Weatherby Lake needs something.

If a person has lived in Kansas City long enough, they have an overall impression of our surrounding cities - Independence; Overland Park; Platte City, etc. . . then there is Weatherby Lake.

My uncle died this last summer. He had a very successful career. He was over hundreds of people. At his funeral, what people most said about him was his kindness, kindness, kindness. It can go a long way.
