But She's Such a Nice Looking Young Lady...

Had to go to Strassers yesterday (the mega hardware store on Southwest Blvd) to pick up a hard to find item. Chatting with the clerk, he asked me where I was from..."WL" to which he responded, "You put people in jail" and "BSSANLYL" (see title).

What to do? I could correct myself and say " Did I say WL, I meant Weatherby (our neighboring city to the north."...or maybe "yeah, Joe and Gary are out of control "...or "we don't catch many speeders anymore so we have moved on to the more lucrative industry of catching trespassers". Cornered, (I was in the weed killer section) I blurted out my only defense..."What about old ugly people?"

Huh? I could sense I had him on the ropes. "yeah, you know, people like me, old, poorly dressed, ugly people" (I was wearing old shorts, a PHHS Volleyball T and my Hospital Hill cap). Clearly non-descripts like me are arrested everyday, so in the name of fairness a few of the beautiful people have to bite the bullet.". He looked at me intently...what was going on in his mind? (Hopefully he was thinking I wasn't that old...or ugly).

Caught between a rock and a hard place, he responded, "Oh".

I smiled, did an about face and hurried to the checkout. Old and ugly...it's a beautiful thing...

For those nay sayers who think WL should throw the book at this woman . . . do you get how ridiculous the outside world thinks this charge is? Whether it's true or not, we look like one of those small towns who wait in the shadows ready to pounce on the next unsuspecting outsider. And if you don't care what we look like, try getting a buyer for your property when you put it up for sale. Many people (in and out of WL) think we live in a restrictive community where we can’t sneeze without breaking some rule or code.

Anon 713 - you are out of your mind. People who live here know better. And people who don't live here now know we will not put up with people coming here and doing whatever they want. Think about it for a moment, how did the lady find C-Point? One must really drive around to find it. I just wish the WLIC would go after Kansas City with the same vigor.

7:13 :
I am glad we live in a "restrictive" community, take a look around at a more permissive environment (did you read about the Plaza?), scary. I would think prospective buyers want their property protected, personal and WLIC. I think it is a plus, not a negative.

8:35 and 8:48. You're missing the point. If you want restrictive to a point short of asking permission to breathe, you've got it. Whereas that may be an over fabrication, it’s not far from Joe Public opinion. Step foot outside of WL and get a reality check.

The woman said she had friends at Weatherby Lake. Having been here before, went and sat at a picnic table. Do you actually know, beyond doubt, she read those signs and took an I’m-going-to-ignore-it, could-care-less attitude? Do you truly think the same punishment should apply to sitting at a picnic table as compared to an outsider launching a boat at WL? There’s a big difference!

WLIC is a wimpy bully - the little guy is easy to pounce on. Wouldn't be surprised if WLIC had known this would take a media turn, they would have cowered in some corner like they do with Kansas City and dropped it.

It just gets better. If she had friends here wonder why they violated WLIC rules and allowed her to go unaccompanied down to the Point? I wonder if their names will come out? What's the difference? Trespassing is trespassing. Why don't you go for a walk down at the National on the cart path, I'm sure they wouldn't mind as long as you have your thank you notes in your possesion (and not be old and ugly like Mike).

2:22 you're living in a cave.

Doesn't matter if WL throws the book at this woman, it will eventually blow over in the media. Weatherby Lake can continue with its disagreeable reputation and all our malicious residents can live happily ever after. Business as usual.

Someone who launches a boat on the lake is a blatant act of trespassing. They would have to be a complete idiot not to deduce they were doing something prohibited. Sitting at a picnic table? It’s not the same.

But more important, has every single person(s) caught trespassing on WLIC property (regardless how they were trespassing) been handle identically by our law enforcement and court? Has each one of these individuals been arrested, fingerprinted, thrown in jail and ultimately fined the same? Weren’t there other “trespassers” at the last municipal court? Were they all arrested, fingerprinted, and fined?

If that is true, good for Weatherby Lake for protecting us and our lake, regardless how the “outside” feels.

If not, this woman should rally all the support she can get.

Just curious, if your annoying Jackdaw neighbor is using your property for his or her’s benefit, (in other words trespassing) shouldn’t they also be arrested, fingerprinted, and fined if you press charges.

I guess Jackdaw chooses to distinguish between an idiot who can't read the posted property and launches a boat versus the idiot who can't read the posted property and sits at the picnic bench. I wish he would tee off on members who encourage or aid non-members in using our lake, it is not only trespassing it is stealing as well.

Jackdaw Observer said...

4:14: Most (not a few), out there is the real world, believe there is a big difference between the two violations. We do not know of or have heard of anyone at the lake who encourages non-members to use our lake. It appears, since you bring it up, you do. We suggest you do something about it.

In fact I have, directly with the members(s). I think if you talk to a director or police, they do stop "guests" with no sponsor present more than you might think.

Jackdaw Observer said...

Operative word "stop".

Were they arrested, fingerprinted, thrown in jail, and ultimately fined?

After all . . .

"Trespassing is trespassing"

and we certainly don't want to "distinguish between an idiot who can't read the posted property and launches a boat versus the idiot who can't read the posted property and sits at the picnic bench."

nor would we want to distinguish an idiot guest.

What warrants an arrest for trespassing on WLIC Property?

[ ] Non-member launching a boat on Weatherby Lake

[ ] Non-member pulling in to make a phone call

[ ] Child (with parents living or not living at WL) who grew up at WL lake and considers WL their one and only home even though they do not live here

[ ] Non-member desperately needing to go to the restroom

[ ] Non-member pre-teens not perceptive to read signs

[ ] Non-member sitting at a picnic table

[ ] News reporter covering story at WL and/or taking pictures

[ ] Non-member real estate agent showing property and lake amenities

[ ] Non-member family and friends

[ ] . . . . . .

If trespassing is trespassing, there should be no exceptions?

Jennifer Payne's car was parked right in front of the no trespassing sign. I think maybe the police followed standard procedure b/c she was lying to them, rather than just being honest. You don't just stumble upon C-point. Her neighbors have boats here is what she stated on the news. In court, the tresspass fines vary, primarily based on whether one is fishing, sitiing, launching a boat (while tresspassing). Jennifer is definitely enjoying the attention. I think this just shows that WLIC will press charges on a pretty girl or an ugly old man, or a minority, it just shows consistency. And if a judge lets her off, then they are not consistent, but are the wimps.
