Fireworks Fund Raising a Dud

The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
July 3rd

According to the Mayor, the Fireworks Fund is "way behind" in supporting the $17,000 orgy of light and sound about to be blown up this evening (no danger of a rain out tonight).  The balance sheet shows revenue of $7,756.26 as of June 28th.  Neither Mayor Bos or Fireworks Maven Alderman Finn offered their opinion on why donations are behind.  In any event City Hall welcomes donations and will continue to collect your contributions.  If you liked what you saw tonight your check can do the talking.

Apparently one WL citizen is pushing for the elimination of all fireworks, including the City display.  This unnamed person has approached all the aldermen and mayor with environmental concerns.  No discussion beyond mentioning the issue by the mayor.

Speaking of fireworks, a spirited conversation with South Platte Ambulance District representative Ron Wheeler took place at the BOA.  A major change is coming to your ambulance service (as well as increase in your levy/taxes).  Tomorrow.

first thing, I did contribute to the fireworks fund. I thought the display last night was ok, not great. last year they were better i thought. not sure where the extra money spent this year showed up. i thought it was interesting there was no horn blowing, clapping and hooting after the fireworks were over this year, last year there was quite a response from the crowd after finishing, just my thoughts.

I have to agree. So so on the performance. The finale was rather disappointing. I'm speculating that maybe they were able to reduce the contract with the company at the last minute? Probably not. But it would make me feel better about it.

I hope the critique of the fireworks is not taken personally by anyone, just maybe a reason to question the fireworks company on what they provided.

I rate the fireworks last night as a 7.5 out of 10.

I understand Obama is considering a tax on anyone not contributing to the fireworks fund to stop the freeloaders from watching without contributing to the fund - he calls it a penalty, but I think it may be a tax.

Hey, at least it wasn't San Diego:

Hopefully, the show will be better next year - if not, we can always watch the National Golf Club for free.

Although wood smoke conjures up fond memories of sitting by a cozy fire, it is important to know that the components of wood smoke and cigarette smoke are quite similar, and that many components of both are carcinogenic. Wood smoke contains fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and various irritant gases such as nitrogen oxides that can scar the lungs. Wood smoke also contains chemicals known or suspected to be carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxin.
Fireworks offer similar hazards.

Romney McMillan ... It might be called an assessment too

Depending on which way the wind blows today its a multiple choice. A fee ,an assessment and a tax

Video.. a stubborn thing when you are "well oiled weathervane "

City could provide a common shooting area for people who want to shoot their own fireworks. Have area open for three days or so. That would get them away from houses, nervous pets, etc. There would be lots of adults there to supervise kids and keep them safe and kids could supervise adults and keep them safe too. Everyone could also get the benefit of shooting them together = spend less money and have more fun. People could even contribute some firecrackers and start a new lake tradition = firecracker superstring.

Some people enjoy shooting fireworks. You don't want to take their liberty away to do what they love and enjoy or you might find someday that liberty is taken away for something that you love to do. Have you ever seen a kid walk into a fireworks tent? It is like pure bliss.

Every single bit of those fireworks came from the earth and atmosphere and when you burn them, the component parts return to the earth and atmosphere (in a generally less toxic state). It is a zero sum deal and a good time is had by all. Matter is not created or destroyed. There are some things like Strontium Salts (red colour), Barium Salts (green colour) that are poisonous but when burned they are oxidised to Barium Oxide, Strontium Oxide, etc.

Most of the time the bad stuff becomes much more inert as far as your body is concerned. You drink barium oxide at the hospital when you have x-ray of your bowels.

When I was younger, there were literally hundreds of thousands of bottle rockets shot into W/L by kids. A lot of people would shoot their fireworks on C-Point from the docks after the big show. It was pure awesome. Everyone tried to one up each other. You could probably not find even one tiny ppm trace of pollution in the lake from all those fireworks and there were thousands and thousands of them shot.

It is also obeying John Adams executive order to celebrate signing of Declaration of Independence. He said..."It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

The one bad thing about fireworks is that kids get hurt with them sometimes - but kids can get hurt with bicycles too and they are not talking about banning them. If you use it a positive time to teach them to shoot them safely, then no one needs to get hurt especially with wimpy fireworks they make these days.

America is slippin when Quatar has better fireworks than us.

I could probably rant about this subject for quite a bit longer but I will stop. Thank you for listening.

4:15..maybe they could call it a 'capitation'?

Capitation; ...A tax or imposition upon the person... (Blacks Law)

A tax or fee upon each head or person ( Webster's Unabridged)

And Article I, Section 9, Clause 4:
"...No Capitation, or other direct Tax, shall be laid..."

According to this article, Members of CONgress are exempt from the heathcare bill.
