Keep An Eye Out

Mike:
Would you be amenable to making a post on your blog notifying readers that the new WL Phone Directories are done and will be delivered over the next week or so?  With the weather being so unpredictable, we're hoping people quickly remove them from their doors and porches!

Thanks in advance.

WLIC Dredge Letter, Part II

The other "item of interest" in the WLIC letter was an update on progress being made regarding sewage spills.  The letter mentions a recent meeting involving KCMO, WLIC and "Weatherby Lake", I assume that means the City of Weatherby Lake.  I imagine there was much more discussed than summarized in the letter.  That being said, the biggest threat to the watershed by KCMO remains unanswered.  A warning system is in place to tell us what we (and KCMO) already know.  During big rain events, massive amounts of ground water are infiltrating the sewer system and overwhelming the pumps.  Imaging by KCMO is yet to be conducted and when it is completed the question is...what next?  Facing similar problems throughout their aging system and the prospect of billions of dollars needed to satisfy EPA requirements...how likely are they to address the problems that affect the Lake...and in what time frame?  Next time you chat with a WLIC director ask them the time frame KCMO and the EPA have agreed to remedy the problems cited by the EPA.  Any guesses out there?

"The Dredge is COMING!!!

You may have received your Dredge letter in the past few days from WLIC, we got ours on Friday...just in case you did not, a summary:

  • Dredging will begin, weather permitting, the first two weeks of March
  • Completion targeted NLT May 31st
  • North Cove, U/C/G/O/A2 coves are scheduled for dredging
  • Most of the silt will be placed @ Amity/Barry (bean field), the remainder below the dam
  • Lake front owners have the opportunity to hire Dredge America if the area in front of their home is not being dredged
  • The WLIC Dredge Fund is being used to pay for the operation

Mayor Funkhouser speaksImage by MoBikeFed via Flickr
That's what the voter turnout in KCMO was for the primary...wow.  For all the hand-ringing on how bad the Funk was and how he needed to be replaced, not much enthusiasm generated by his heir(s).  WL has consistently been towards the top of % voting in Platte County...it will be interesting to see how the April turnout is.
One last pic of the Funk...I promise...unless he moves to WL and runs for Mayor.

Pick Up?

Yes, last Monday was a Federal Holiday but our friends from Allied Waste will be on the job tomorrow...maybe.  Weather conditions (ie snow) could change that...we shall see.

Here Comes The Sludge

If you've crossed the dam the past week you will see the preparations being made for the dredging of WL.  I didn't attend the recent WLIC Board Meeting, I did receive approved minutes from the January meeting which generally outline what is coming:
  • A letter will be sent by WLIC to members informing them of the dredge operations (date unknown).
  • Members will have the opportunity to contract with the dredging company if dredging operations do not include in front of their property.
  • Discharge will be placed on the Amity/Barry property (bean field) and below the dam.
  • Although discussion of specific coves was conducted, it was not noted in the minutes.
The minutes did not disclose the date when the dredging will begin...the contract had not been agreed or signed at the time of the January meeting.  Obviously that has been concluded by the fact the dredging materials are being put in place.  Further questions? Call your director.

Okay, By A Nose Hair

I got the finishers right, but it was Sly James by 30 plus votes over Burke in KCMO mayoral race.  Depending on voter turn out in the general election in the urban core it could be interesting.  Our friends Ed Ford and Russ Johnson look like the returning incumbents for their aldermanic seats.

Where Is It...What Is It?

Hint, it is not on public property and it is in Weatherby Lake.

In a Funk

Well, maybe out of one.  Today's KCMO primary narrows the field to two, my guess leaving Mark the Funkster as odd man out...literally.  Although he professed to want to be a "good neighbor", he never quite came up with the goods when it came to WL.  He did a nice job of saying all the right things when the Barry Road Bridge was closed, drug his feet and continued to do so after the road was reopened (he said he would look into the goofy speed zone at the bridge and as you can so nothing has happened).  Add in a sewer spill into the lake (no sorry necessary) and you have a decent summary of his attitude towards his neighbor to the west, Weatherby Lake...nada...nothing.

Mike Burke has all the momentum and he is a so-called Northlander...will it make a difference?  We shall see.  Predictions are Sly James and Burke will sprint to the finish in April with Burke the winner by a nose...any takers?

Big Doings

Weatherby Lake from the westImage via Wikipedia
A number of emails bouncing around...just in case you didn't get one:
From Ray Staton:

All Weatherby Lake residents and friends are invited to the 2011 Happening at the Community Center on Barry Road next to the WL water tower. What is the HAPPENING you asked? It starts at 5 PM with all of the clubs, charities, and interest groups setting up tables in the Community Center to promote their activities and solicit new members. The displays will be open from 5 PM till 7 PM.  At 7 PM, the tables are removed, the sound system is turned on, the bar is opened (free wine, beer, soda, and water), the snacks are put out, the music starts, and we dance and socialize until 11 PM. Don't know how to dance, we will teach you. Don't know how to be sociable, we will put you with the anti-social group. Looking for a chance to find out what WL has to offer, you found the place and event. Please attend and bring your friends. Maybe we can entice them into moving to WL.

That would be tomorrow, Saturday.

Snow Job

Snowflake. Small microscope kept outdoors. Sna...Image via Wikipedia
The big snow not only wiped out a bunch of school days (can you say June for the end of school?) it also caused the BOA to cancel the monthly meeting.  To date no redo on the books, the City is on autopilot.  No complaints here, one less meeting to go to.  The Feds might want to look at copying WL, one less meeting here and there might benefit all of us.  Tomorrow:  Do you know what's Happening?

Two Feet of Snow,Sabbatical & Stuff

It started with the "big snow" followed by a big snow in Denver, followed by an 8 hour drive between Memphis and Little Rock, because of...you guessed it, snow.  (Normally it is about a 2 hour drive)  Add in a crazy work schedule with travel and voila, my self imposed sabbatical from blogging.  Happens every year.  But in any event back on the blog with various items to address.  Haven't had time to wade into Comments, I am aware of them piling up while gone, will get to them today/tomorrow.
So while the temp heads north of 60 this week thought I would pass the pic along from a reader...hopefully the snows are past...wishful thinking?
