Painting the Town Red

Previous comment noted the "red" used by WLIC...sure enough, yesterday as I was on West Side passing H-1 Cove, the glorious hue of red jumped out at me.  Fire Hydrant Red.  Sign posts too.  It does say, "hey trash can right here" if that was the intended effect.  Must be because it is right across from WLIC prez Joe.

Party On

Seems like the 4th hit early this year, hot weather made for lots of parties...lots of bodies in and on the water...fun.

Tur de East Side

Took a morning bike ride the other day, (7:15 AM to be exact) and made my way up East Side Drive after turning off Rocky Point...nice work out on the hills.  As I approached City Hall I noticed a fair amount of traffic entering our City from the "back end" (why would the EAGC decide to highlight the "rear" of the City...but I digress).  Common feature of the 12 consecutive cars I observed, bedsides four wheels,... no City stickers, hence my huge assumption they were not City residents and just passing through.  Nothing wrong with that.  But it did make me wonder.  When was the last time the City has conducted a traffic survey?  Answer: years.  Why bother?  $, road $ that is.  As you might recall our fair City is part of three separate road districts.  When was the last time we got some of the road money for repairs or paving?  When was the last time the Mayor or BOA formally approached any one of the three jurisdictions?

It would require some heavy lifting by our elected officials to fix the problem...and none are up to the task.  That is the plain truth.

(Somebody made the comment recently the monuments @ City Hall resembled a "cow chute"...not sure about that...maybe "car chute")

Governed By The Few

"You can't compel people to vote", said KCMO Councilman Russ Johnson in the KC Star yesterday.  He was referring to the 603 voters who applied to vote in the special election on a proposed streetcar district.  Total eligible registered voters = 5,900, so about 10% will decide.  So a majority of the vote will make the call on a $100 million dollar enterprise.

The last WL election had a light turnout due to the fact there were no contested City races...the turnout might have been worse had there not been a contested School Board race.  So, you get what you get, right Russ?

School Is Out

Park Hill School District (minus high school seniors) has the last half day of school today, summer vacation begins officially this afternoon (you may be painfully/happily aware if you have kids/grandkids/friends with school age children).  Ah those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.  Mother nature did not disrupt the schedule like the previous year, so the Memorial Day Holiday will be free and clear of fretting over finals, etc.  When you go past Park Hill High you can see your tax dollars already at work on  the update of the cafeteria, trying to take advantage of the summer pause to complete construction.

A Walk In The Park

Article in the Star today regarding KCMO parks and their national ranking, which is pretty good.  Little ol WL was not included in the survey of course, but if it was, I feel sure we would be top ranked.  Me and Bubba run past most of them on our "run around the block" on Sunday, and even at the blinding speed we run, we still appreciate the high level of maintenance and beauty of the parks.  Nice.  Your tax dollars at work.

Continuing on the Theme

AARP
AARP (Photo credit: debaird™)
The aging (and exit) of volunteers in the City extends to City government as well.  Take a look at the BOA and Mayor...they collected their AARP cards many moons ago.  Prediction: the turnover on the BOA will begin this fall...who will take their place?

Old Guard

Nice boat ride with friends late yesterday afternoon.  Discussion came up regarding yesterdays post.  Question came up, "who will take their place?".  Good question.  Many of the volunteers in the City and WLIC are seasoned citizens and part of the migration out of the city...so who will take their place?

Hitting The Exit

The Dean Sparks Estate Sale on Hillside finished up yesterday with virtually everything going out the door.  Casual conversation with some of the "shoppers" revealed at least a couple more prominent families close to posting for sale signs and leaving the lake.  In a couple of cases, just like the Sparks, it involves downsizing and retirement.  A natural part of turnover in a community, it seems to be picking up steam in WL.

Goo

Today's KC Star
"Algae warnings issued for lakes"
"Kansas has prohibited skiing, swimming, and wading in four lakes  because of high levels of toxic blue-green algae"
"Skin contact can cause allergic reactions, ingesting the infected water can cause diarrhea, vomiting and even death"
Talk about a buzz kill for those interested in selling property in/near those lakes.

Have you seen the goo in the coves here @ WL.  Not blue-green algae but certainly makes swimming unappealing and the lake very unattractive.  All the monuments in the world won't take the place of good lake water.

Bad Actors

The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
May 1
Per Ace

Chief Gary reported 5 felony arrests for the month of April, 3 in one incident previously blogged about and two more on separate traffic stops, both involving narcotics.  Ah the Young and Restless (full disclosure, pure conjecture, they could have been oldsters like Farmer John).  Brings to mind the fact that the beauty of our Lake and the fine weather will be a magnate for lots of folks, felons and females writing thank you notes.  My sense the new C Point will be a destination for WLIC members and those who are non-members but just want to have fun.

The Historical Committee had a redux of Shirley Kimsey witching the Anders Cemetery.  She found quite a few more graves.  The Committee also paid to have a survey with ground penetrating sonar...results...it confirmed Miss Shirley was "right on".  You might want to mosey on up to the Cemetery, it is peaceful and quite a bit of work continues to be done by the volunteers.

Make An Offer

The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
(per Ace)
May 1

A man named Hennesy from KCMO has offered the lot directly west of the water tower to the city.  Over a half acre lot but has the new driveway thru it to the house behind the CC.  He said 'make an offer'.  Not much BOA interest but individually they will all look at the property.

CC? No No

The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
May 1

Although the Mayor noted that "rentals at the Community Center are up", the CC continues its downward spiral on the financial trend line.  The two previous meetings the Mayor has noted the low rental income from the first of the year.  So what's the scoop?

  • Projected income 2012-$15,000, YTD through April-$2,910
  • Expenses 2012-$40,550, YTD through April-6,705
Historically the CC continues to go from Red to Redder.

Appeal for Donations

A recent communication from the EAGC:
See What’s Happening on Eastside Drive at City Hall!

Weatherby Lake is putting on a brand new face!
New entrance monuments are now under construction on Eastside Drive at City Hall, soon to begin on Barry Road at Hillside and Forest, and later at Eastside Drive and Barry.
This is the first phase of the City Entrance Project that includes a total of eight monuments designed to create a special sense of arrival and identity unique to our community.
The total project budget is $360,000, funded by tax deductible contributions and KCMO compensation.
We have available cash on hand to complete the monuments at Forest, Hillside, and Eastside Drive at City Hall, thanks to generous supporters in the community.
We are over halfway funded for the Eastside Drive and Barry Road monument, but need your financial support in order to begin its construction as soon as the bidding process is completed.
We need your help NOW to reach our goal for the first phase, and to construct the PotomacWestside Drive, Kerns, and Childress monuments in the second phase.
With your support, donations and pledges, we hope to complete the Entrance Project in 2013.

Help get our city up to date and looking great with a donation to the Weatherby Lake Entrance Project!

Please use the attached Pledge Form to make your tax deductible donation.
For more information, go to the Entrance Advisory Group page on the city website at http://www.cityofweatherbylake-mo.gov/pView.aspx?id=628&catid=28
We’ll be happy to meet with you to answer any questions, and we welcome anyone interested in helping with fundraising.

The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
1 May

What's missing?  Why the P of course and let's keep it that way (old joke if you have ever owned a pool).  Apparently the City fathers/mothers want to insure it is a problem they don't want to have to deal with...Jerry acknowledged he has been approached by developer/builder John Gray with an offer to build and donate to the City a swimming pool, ostensibly somewhere in West Ridge.  Hmmm.  Ace reports the BOA were unanimous in saying "No".

https://www.google.com/search?aq=0&oq=You+tube&ix=acb&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=youtube#q=baby+ruth+in+pool+site:youtube.com&sa=X&ei=LE6iT-bvC4nc9AS6penWCA&ved=0CFYQ2wE&hl=en&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=5fd8887cc3ebdf49&biw=1280&bih=705&ix=acb

Loose talk of having a pool in the City has popped up now and then over the years (not at BOA but at backyard beer busts).  We may have one of the more pristine lakes when it comes to MO lakes, but have you taken a gander at the water in the coves lately?  Yuck.  I suppose the mild winter, warm spring have propagated all the green slime...you have to admit it is nasty.

Mayday arrived with me on assignment and out of town (DFW & EWR)...but never fear, we've got you covered.  Cub blogger Ace attended the BOA and gave me his notes, so you have all the news that is fit to blog.

The long standing tradition of the City blowing up other peoples money will continue as the BOA approved spending $17,000 for the annual Fireworks display.  Your donation(s) are welcomed and although Alderman Finn (the Queen of Fireworks) was AWOL from the BOA meeting, I am sure she would have made an entreaty to give to the fund  And yes there will be a rain date of July 5th for those inquiring minds that want to know.

May BOA

Tonight, 7PM, City Hall.  Could be a short meeting since the last meeting was on April 13th...but past performance may not predict future results.
