Lights Out

The Official Unofficial Minutes of the WL BOA
Feb 2nd Mtg

One vote away from going dark @ WL. Mary Hoy once again resurrected the thought of turning off/removing street lights...supposedly because of cost. Jerry of course has mused about this for some time, more of same Tuesday night. Do the math, if another alderman votes for turning off the lights, Mayor Jerry steps in as the tie breaking vote...adios street lights. Will anybody on the board break ranks? Who will it be...Finn, DeJong, Bossert? My guess it won't be Finn, leaving the DeJong/Bossert votes up for grabs.

Police Chief Gary when asked by Finn what his thoughts were said the PD would not be leading the charge on no lights. Gary said noise and light are what makes the bad guys nervous. Bos quoted an unknown study cited by Gene Roberts as evidence crime goes down when lights go off. Really?

Two members of the audience voiced their concerns about no lights, especially for those who walk or are on the street after dark because of the lack of sidewalks or in some instances shoulder on the road. Too bad.

But if we turn off the lights, how will people see our beautiful new entrances?

Hopefully Kansas City will keep them lit on Barry so people will see their way to and from the CC. Of course Mary will probably have them turn off the parking lot lights.

WLIC would love to keep you in the dark.

I find it very hard to believe that we as a city are letting our 'leader's' even consider turning off and removing our street lights. I should think many communities that don't presently have street lights would be raising money to install and keep them lit. Maybe we can start a committee to pay for street lights with donations! This must be part of fulfilling an old campaign promise by Ms Hoy. Remember her wanting to eliminate utility lines?

If Ms Hoy is so concerned about money she should not be literally draining the water fund.

When our crime rate rapidly increases or a child or walker is hit by a vehicle on a dark street, then this turkey should come home to roost on the empty heads of who voted for it.

The monuments are going to be lit!! Turn off the streetlights to be able to pay for these lights. Our City government is as screwed up as Washington!!
