And They're Off!

FYI, the Kentucky Derby is May 2nd...but I'm not talking Derby. I'm talking the race for the East Side Alderman right here at WL. A month ago it seemed liked a done deal, Ed Bossert declared his intentions as a write in and Hoy, White, Folkedahl all jumped on the bandwagon. But wait. Apparently another write in candidate has filed and at least two more are considering. Interesting. I'll verify the name of the 2nd candidate as well as others. I understand one person is considering a "stealth" campaign. Watch for Seabiscuit at the back of the pack. In the meantime, darling, I'll have another mint julep. More details to follow in the Weatherby Lake Living.

If De Surma is on the bandwagon, wondered if Hoy, White, and /or Folkedahl are going to have to reposition themselves. Ron Surma was instrumental in Tony White's retirement party last year.

I almost never read this blog, mainly because I would rather watch paint dry. However, this last post has at least given me a chuckle. As I understand the logic, since Ron Surma helped me smoke a pig for my retirement party, I will vote for De Surma. I like Peppermint Patties - should I also vote for York?? I am not sure that Mary Hoy or Pat are on any bandwagon - this seems to me to be just a supposition put forward by Mike (another instance of not letting the facts get in the way of an opinion). What I will confirm is that Pat White will offer help to anybody who is running to be her successor - doesn't mean that she has to vote for them. She sees her responsibility as making the transition as easy as possible. The right thing to do? Absolutley. Fodder for the blogging naysayers? Don't much care.

It's only natural someone would come to that conclusion - even if they put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5. More people setting the record straight helps the falsehoods from becoming permanent anchors.

10:21pm...it's only natural one would come to what conclusion???

Whites are friends or associates with the Surmas - if you're helping roast a pig for someone, one would think you're friends; White offering sign assistance to Bossert - based on Mike's blog. Natural for 1:06 to wonder where their support will lie. Doesn't matter, doubt if anyone would base their vote or care about a present or former alderman opinion. Mike is right, the race is on and it's always interesting.

But to Tony White's point, just because you are friends with someone does not mean you will necessarily vote for them. I thought one voted for the person they feel is best qualified for the job...not the person they happen to be friends with???? Anyone who votes on the basis of friendship is doing a disservice to our democracy...they should just stay home and not vote.

The hard part is, whose sign do you put in your yard? Or, as some do, make life simply and have a policy of no signs.

"simple" not "simply"

Signage...not difficult at all. If your friends have half a brain they realize there is a democratic process and anyone with half a brain cell knows everyone should vote for who they believe can do the job the best. Period. Being friends with someone should have no bearing on how one votes.

If you have a friend who is very sincere and feels they are qualified and you absolutely don't think they are, by all means, put the other candidate's sign in your yard. Since you are an upfront and upstanding individual, while you're at it, make sure you let that "friend" know why you think the other candidate is far more qualified. Further, why don't you go all out and campaign for the other candidate so the community is not possibly endangered with your "friend's" lack of ability. Of course, your "friend" will understand if they half a brain.
