Water/Sewer Rate Hearing

Tomorrow night, March 31st, 7PM @ City Hall. Lots of questions. Hopefully the Mayor and BOA have answers. Questions include:
  • Why wouldn't the City pass on the water rate increase to users? Conjecture the City might "pass" on passing along the increase. KCMO won't pass, rest assured.
  • Why would the City continue to collect the "meter fee" when the BOA voted months ago to not proceed with the "radio read meters"? What was the collected money used for? Why wouldn't we use radio read instead of requiring city employees wand each meter by hand? Even KCMO has radio read.
  • How will the City fund the needed repairs to the gravity portion of the sewer system?
  • How will the City service users outside of the City? How much will it cost to upgrade parts of the system in those areas?
  • Are we prepared to certify our sewer system is free from storm water incursions? How much time/money will it cost?
Inquiring minds want to know.

I am curious where the money now goes that we are charged above the actual fees we pay to KC for water and sewer. Anyone ever notice what the amount charged to residents vs. the amount paid to KC is??? We only have some 700 odd houses in WL so why would we need radio read meters. KC has thousands of houses it makes sense for them, where it does not make sense for us....

Radio read meters make sense for WL especially because we are a small operation. The plan was two fold, all new construction would be required to install a radio read and a phased program would be started over a long period of time to replace the current meters some of which are 15 to 20 years old. Currently both employees in the Public Works Department "walk the streets" every billing period and wand each meter. Cost efficient/effective? Radio read meters could be read by a device placed in the City police vehicle during third shift. Is a day and a half savings of man hours worth it? I think so.

Fact: Weatherby Lake residents are paying for more water than what Kansas City is sending. The city has an overage of city water revenue. Wouldn’t it follow the residents of Weatherby Lake may have faulty meters?

I don't think the amount of water we are charged for is the problem. The average is less that $4o for 2 months the problem is the excessive amounts we are charged for sewer of over $130 for the 2 months. That is over 3 times the cost of the water. Also the meter fees that have been collected for over a year and the fact that we were told months ago that we would not be getting the new meters. Alas new bills came out and what is there a $5 meter charge STILL.... Come on city government this is a JOKE...

$21000. a wide estimate is collected for radio meters per year??? Think about it.
