New Feature-Free For All Friday

Thanks to one inspired blogamaniac for the name of this new feature, Free For All Friday. Many of you post comments, usually responding to a topic, but sometimes not. If you haven't, look at some of the comments, always interesting. The idea for FFAF is to post whatever is on your mind. Hopefully related to Weatherby Lake. Anyway, have at it

Do the WLIC Mud Wrestlers still exist? If not why? If so, what are they doing?

Yes, the mudrasslers still exist. However, often now they are also called the Stream Team, which may cause confusion. Headed now by Kaila Schmidt, with help/history from Bonnie V. She's doing a fantastic job! Lots of energy. Has prioritized sample taking to the critical areas related to new development. Been highly active in watch-dogging/communicating w/ the developers in the 152 corridor. Created an organized system for making sure samples are being taken and followed up upon.

Also they have a new asset in the WLIC office named Erica Brower. Background in environmental watershed issues/testing of some sort. A great resource.

If you're thinking about being critical, remember it's a volunteer group with only so much time to go out and safely slug in the mud when many are cozy at home.

First, I am very interested in hearing your response to Brian. I would love to hear how you "measured up" to your campain promises to your actual performance. Oh, and don't forget Mike to include your current performance in your position with the WLIC!

Second, looking forward to the "measuring up" of Alderman Finn and past Mayor York. I am sure you would not intentionally forget to add them to the list so the community can accurately assess their performance to their campain promises.

Lastly, we are all still waiting for those names of the "Weatherby Lakers for Better Goverment" so we can properly thank them for their wisdom and leadership during the final stages of the campain.

Given all the good work by the WLIC dream .... I mean Stream Team, what action is being taken to stem the flow of chocolate colored water that polutes and fills our lake with sludge. Every rain seems worse than the last.

PS: I am not sure why some of you are afraid to post under your own name versus "anonymous". Could it be that you are afraid to publicly represent your opinions which are so easily made anonymously?

Good question Dan. Let's ask the "Weatherby Lakers for Better Government" why they didn't use their names. Maybe they have started a trend!!

Dan,

Great question...who are you? What is your full name?

As my last response did not appear, I'm re-submitting my comment to Dan tempered a bit. Perhaps i was editied, but i'd rather give benefit of the doubt that the problem was more my own lack of computer skills to post correctly, or a technical glitch in the system.

Dan,

Firstly, i find it very odd that you would reply with a jaded comment regarding the Mudrasslers as a "dream team" when it was YOU that didn't know if they existed in the first place. Sounds like you need to get more involved. Then, you would know the answer to your own question!

I venture a guess that those residents who are giving of their personal time wouldn't quite consider their efforts a "dream" and quite rightly would take offense to your overtone.

To more specifically answer your question...each rain event, the MR are out taking samples, then running tests city hall, filling out paperwork, and then driving their samples downtown to the lab when baseline thresholds have been exceeded. All in an effort to monitor affects to YOUR lake and provide legal proof of environmental grievances.

Next time you drive by the critical areas, do you really think that those silt fences and hay bales appear out of the goodness of the developer's heart? More often, one of those Stream Team members has seen the problem, and hounded the developers until they comply with run-off prevention measures.

Were you at any of the Airport Master Plan meetings? Or Owen's development meetings? Well, i think the Mudrasslers were there for you to voice concerns about this Chocolate mess that's haunting us.

If you have any ideas how to improve the effort. I'm sure everyone's eager to hear your thoughts.

Regarding your wanting to "out" the anonymous.....i think others have identified the paradox in that!

Not sure how many "dan's" there are around the lake, but I am certainly not afraid to post my full name as Dan Soule. Now that you know all of you who are anonymous can feel free to state your name. And I would say that me and my family have done our time with the WLIC including the Mudrastlers until we were run over by a group that does not seem to have the same passion for protecting our lake in a way that makes a real point... in the pocketbook. It is not enough to force developers and contractors to put up half hearted mud fences and hay bales. The damage is happening with every storm, something I am sure the current Stream Team can document. The difference is the seeming lack of pursuit for legal and monetary punishment to those who offend. I do not wish to belittle the work of those on the Stream Team and in other positions which are attempting to protect our lake. I am critical of the lack of results in punishing those who offend, so that others will respect the law. I think this can be said for many things around our lake including the pursuit of trespassers.

My 2 cents... I look forward to all posters identifying themselves.

Dan:

Let me be the first to thank you and your family's past efforts in protecting the lake. Now that I have a clearer idea of what you specifically see as lacking, all i can say is i don't necessarily disagree. Money does talk, and sometimes more loudly.

However, my main concern with maintaining a hard-line monetary approach is that it either takes gratis expertise, or money to pay for legal litigation. I don't know how many of our current board members are lawyers, but I do know the pockets are tight. I've heard a lot of the historical activity was spearheaded by a President with significant legal chops.

Again, thank you for your "passion". Gosh, we could have gotten to this place sooner. But, therein lies one of the problems with blog repartee.

While I've always felt free to use my name, the rules of this blog do not require it. Therefore, i respectfully opt to remain, yours truly -- but anonymous.

To DAn: I, too, thank you for your past involvement with the WLIC. But I think you need to spend time going to meetings or talking with board members because your lack of knowledge is showing. Just because you personally are not aware of what's going on doesn't mean nothing is going on. Ask questions, go to meetings, find the truth, then post your complaints. But at least make "informed" complaints - not half baked perceptions.
