Most of you have followed the blog for some time, a hard core few since the beginning 4+ years ago (this is post #1495 if you are curious). From time to time discussions get started in the Comments section that take on a life of their own, like a brush fire. The most recent example is my post, Money Talks, regarding the recent Platte County Commissioner race. Some comments veered to the subject about WLIC and now it is off to the races.
Interesting timing because it has leaked into the public domain that current WLIC President Joe Ennett will not be running for the Board this fall, thus, a new President will have to be selected. As usual, fault finders surface quickly, as you can see comments about Ennett and Noble. My opinion, although neither was perfect, they got the job done. The WLIC is a multi-million dollar private corporation, run by volunteers with a board elected by the membership. (There is one paid staff member, Bob, the part-time support staff position is open). Compare to the City, a multi-million dollar public entity, paid staff, paid elected officials (Mayor Bos gets $600 a month). How many phone calls do you think Joe gets a week? How many hours do you think he puts in as a "volunteer" President?. I've never asked, maybe he would post that...might give some folks a moment to pause. I'm pretty sure some of the gripers are just that...in private. Although I haven't attended many WLIC meetings this past couple of years, if you get the monthly minutes (I do) you will see the Board always outnumbers the member attendance. And it's not like there is this huge slate of candidates to choose from at the annual meeting...finding bodies to fill all the spots is a chore.
So who will step up to the plate (some might say firing squad) for the leadership of WLIC? For all the detractors of Ennett and Noble...maybe it is you. You seem to be able to identify the flaws of each, maybe you should take the reins. While I do enjoy the Comments, both for the brilliance and stupidity of some, I find it interesting how some use the cloak of anonymity to slam others. It is a little more challenging when your name is attached to it, and that is...

Mike, if you have a problem with people hiding under the cloak of anonymous, don’t you have the ability to eliminate that option when posting a comment?
If you did have the ability to eliminate anonymous, how many people would you get posting to your comments? I think it would become just you talking to yourself out there.
I have always wondered why you have virtually eliminated all critisim of the WLIC. Seems the last complaint of yours was on your blog of Oct 21, 2010 with the occasional soft-shoe on sewage spills or rain/dirt run-off. I just assumed you became In-With-Flint with the WLIC. As a result they can do no wrong.
WLIC meeting minutes aren’t going to tell you what is discussed behind closed doors. Why don’t you ask the hard questions as to what states of affairs are coming up that require attorney consultations? That may give a clue as to what else is going on.
To paraphrase, volunteering is admirable but volunteers are not perfect. Which, like it or not, opens up the possibility the WLIC may not always be on the up and up.
Could be dead wrong but somehow I don’t ever see you champion some little guy up against the WLIC – how ever wrong the WLIC is or however right the little guy is.
"volunteering is admirable but volunteers are not perfect"
And paid public servants are perfect little guy?
You ever serve in a foward area?
Little guy , we live on a lake that has problems Who's gonna solve them? You?
You have that luxury. You have the luxury of whining and not knowing what I know.
This is serious son .. people can end up "dead wrong"
You don't want the truth because you cant handle the truth
You write about it and talk about it at parties.
We need volunteers on the board , we need them . Some use words like sacrifice ,patience and service to our community.
They have neither the time nor the inclination to address everyones indignation
They volunteer service and you question the manner in which they provide it.
I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way,
Otherwise, I suggest you
Run... step up
Are we clear?
9:45pm Why do you feel Mike's coverage of the WLIC is suspect? I think he was quite upfront saying that he hasn't been going to many of those meetings over the past couple of years. But he obviously takes the time to read whatever minutes there are.
Your grave concern leads me to assume that you are now volunteering to give up your monthly Monday at 7:00pm to attend and take notes for him. Thank you.
The fact that he goes to most city BOA meetings and provides coverage there is a great service to me. Whatever info he disseminates is a public service. So far, I've found everything he reports, while sometimes not to my liking nor of my opinion, the facts sure have been accurate when I follow up myself.
9:45, if someone is not attending the meetings how can they roughly say all is well with the WLIC? There seems to be no problem in raking the mayor and BOA over the coals.
One does not have to go to or report on the meetings to be knowledgeable of some of the issues at the WLIC.
I don’t know where Mike was during the Rick Noble era but it was a near civil war here. The tensions at the lake were extremely bad. Guess there are different definitions of what constitutes a “good job”.
I’ve never heard anything bad said about Joe Ennett until this recent blogging. I think there are problems out there with the Space and Dock Committee and Joe is getting the indirect blame for it. Read in this blog, an individual is out there ready to shove pictures down a dock inspector’s throat. Maybe people are looking to Joe to fix things. Maybe Joe doesn’t know what is going on. Maybe Joe is ready to hand the reigns over. One thing I know, he calmed things down after Rick Noble.
Anytime a volunteer neighbor has an authoritarian role over another neighbor, it’s going to open a pandora’s box.
Our dictator and chief Obama will be needing a new job soon! He might be interested as long as you don't have to be a US citizen to qualify!
I went to quite a few board and annual meetings during Rick's tenure at WLIC. I'm amazed that none of the posters have mentioned a particular husband/wife team that were at the heart of quite a bit of acrimony...which Rick and his board had to deal with. As you know, that person and his wife no longer live here. Another member, who still lives here, was a willing accomplice, paying videographer at meetings and contributing outrageous statements...trying to provoke. Yet another member caused what seemed an endless series of accusations of financial misdoings, which were never proven. So I wouldn't attribute all the harmony to a "regime change" but rather the absence of a person who I think was the epitome of a bully.
oops, see above...the word "paying" should read "playing", but then I know you knew that.
Who knows Mike, maybe the bully is reaching out from across the state and posting his/her two cents on your blog.
Mike, that’s not exactly the whole story.
Rick Noble was in constant battle with the city. I saw Rick Noble speak in city meetings. He was an agitator. That is where some of the deepest tensions were in this community. After Joe Ennett came in, the relations with the city went back to friendly terms.
You can’t blame whole thing on Paul Gross. There was no doubt Paul Gross was also an agitator. Always thought it was interesting that he went in, on his own dollar, to fight the user tax.
Fact is those neighbors secretly conspired with Zona Rosa.
They divulged sensitive information and compromised our lake and our lake health
Fact ..
"Our dictator and chief Obama will be needing a new job soon! He might be interested as long as you don't have to be a US citizen to qualify!"
More proof that village idiots are present
"There was no doubt Paul Gross was also an agitator. Always thought it was interesting that he went in, on his own dollar, to fight the user tax."
Get your facts straight.
He lied and divided then used our dollars for his personal witchhunts He enlisted foolish accomplices and self destructing enablers who were duped.
Joe Ennett finished alot of the work and knew how to difuse the obstructionists after they were were outed
Joe lead the completion of the Peret Dam and the Pavilion
but credit should also go to Rick Noble and Don Coleman and other selfless volunteers who developed those ideas in a long range planning process
I have gratitude and respect for all of them
How ever you look at Paul Gross 7:06 You’re conveniently ignoring
. . .

B**, You need to get your facts straight.
From a PG cohort no doubt

In fact I do have the ability to delete a Comment, and to date, 1,500 posts and counting, I have never done that. Not that I wasn't tempted, but you/we need to see what is out there, unvarnished, untouched, as ugly sometimes as it can be.
As one of the people who's not always very happy with you . . , I do appreciate the fact you keep the good, bad and ugly comments
"Our dictator and chief Obama will be needing a new job soon! He might be interested as long as you don't have to be a US citizen to qualify!"
What else can you say about this poison It adds nothing to public discourse
The only way to describe it work of an idiot
Our dictator and chief Obama will be needing a new job soon! He might be interested as long as you don't have to be a US citizen to qualify
So are you really claiming Obama is a Keynesian?
