Airplane Noise

Article in the Sun Gazette 21 August (the free paper that lands in your driveway in the yellow bag) about "Weatherby Lake committee combats airplane noise". It quotes committee member Lynn Hinkle, resident Mary Florence and airport officials. FAA spokesperson Elizabeth Cory says "We haven't had any jets stray off course there (Weatherby Lake)...the FAA isn't aware of a problem with jet traffic". Joe McBride, spokesman for the Kansas City Aviation Department reports "complaints had been sparse" in commenting on complaints from individuals about airplane noise. Interesting 15 paragraph article on page A3.

If you are on Mary Hoy's email list she forwarded an email from Carol Hornung of the Weatherby Lake Airport Information Committee (aka The Noise Committee). Although Weatherby Lake does not have an airport I believe the focus is KCI. They have a form to document noise complaints. There is a public meeting on Sept 4th at the Ambassador Building for the KCI Airport Studies Plan. There are two proposed developments in and around the Airport, an off high-vehicle course near Tiffany Springs Park and the race track west of the runways.

Glance over to page A2 of the Gazette, you'll see a 4 paragraph note about the BRB "Rush Creek bridge closed". Repeats the KCMO perspective on "overweight loads".

There were two parts of the email, here is the second part concerning the committee.

Also FYI you will find below two pieces of information from the Airport Noise Committee which Carol Horning, Chair, sent to me and gave permission for me to send along to each of you. I copied it in it’s entirety so it actually comes from Carol. There was a nice article in the Sun Gazette about this committee’s work. You might go dig it out of your ditch! Sorry, I see so many of them along side our streets after delivery.

Item#1.Mary, They haven’t been approved but I’m sure it won’t be a problem. Also, there is some planning for changes to Tiffany Springs Park involving a large area for ATV and motorcycle back road trails. Bill and I attended a meeting at the architect’s office/Park Board to gather more info on this proposed project. I feel we need to oppose this proposal because of adverse effects on our community. This activity will invite more traffic w trailers on 152 as well as importing unsavory persons unwilling to follow rules set up for the park trail. I feel this park, owned by the city of KC should NOT approve use for motorized vehicles. The reason these ATV folks are driving so far away to enjoy their sport is because no one wants this activity near their community. There is a race track area also slated for this area as well. It certainly bears watching by Weatherby Lake residents. I have some info from the Wed. nite meeting if you would like to see it. Thanks for your interest!! Carol

Item#2. Weatherby Lake Airport Information Committee

Minutes of the Meeting of August 19, 2008

In Attendance: Bill Fenner, Bill Quitmeier, Carol Hornung, Vic DeJong, Doug Turner, Jerry Bos

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM

Minutes from the previous meeting were adopted.

The committee discussed and approved a Committee Charter. Carol will finalize the charter and forward to Mayor Bos.

The committee discussed the filing of noise complaints to the KCI Operations Office and agreed to utilize a simple form to document calls. This documentation should help in resolving complaints. Mayor Bos agreed to call the KCI Operations Office and make them aware of our log of complaints in an effort to assist them in responding to noise complaints. If the response is not satisfactory, then a record of the data will help in elevating the complaints for resolution at a higher level.

Committee members are aware of the final public meeting on the KCI Airport Studies plan scheduled for September 4 at the Ambassador Building and plan to attend this meeting.

The committee discussed two new developments in the area: 1) a proposed off-highway vehicle (OHV) track (or course) in the vicinity of Tiffany Springs park, likely to be used by All Terrain Vehicles (ATV)s and OHVs, and 2) a proposed race track at a location just west of Runway 1L/19R at MCI. This race track construction has not begun but is being considered. Committee members will work towards gathering more data on these two projects.

The meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM

Well folks, this is enough information for a Friday. Hope to see you at the Hearing next Thursday and our regular BOA meeting will follow Labor Day on September 2. Enjoy this great weather on our beautiful lake.

So..people who ride ATV's are 'unsavory persons'? Wow..just wow. There used to be a nice track down in Tiffany Springs park until they closed it. Most of the people who ride these are families with kids. Did you ever think that it might give a kid something fun to do (besides get into trouble with other things) and a nice safe place to ride besides the street? Most of the ATV and Motorcross kids I have met are great kids. I have no idea why you would oppose something like this.
