The Law Doesn't Apply...

While I was off attending the Park Hill High School assembly saluting veterans, your BOA and Mayor were slaving away at a budget work session at City Hall. More about that in a moment. Park Hill High does a great job in honoring vets at this annual event. Choir, band, and wonderful remarks from the various speakers. The keynote speaker for the assembly was our own Larry Maher, Quartermaster for the National VFW HQ here in KC. Larry did a great job, hard to hold students attention for very long, the applause was sustained and heartfelt...nice. The program finished with Taps played by 1963 PH grad Larry Shaver.

Back at City Hall the work session went to almost 12:30. Although it was a City Holiday, all three full time employees, Gary/George/and Gwen got to relax around the budget table instead. It must have been really special for George, a VietNam vet. No mention or recognition for him during the meeting. Jerry decided to go into closed session to discuss employee comp. Would have happened except, as a citizen pointed out, the meeting notice did not include the posting of a closed session. Oops. It's only the law, the Mayor isn't a rookie, and two of the alderman are well beyond their first terms. Had the citizen not been present and posed the question the Sunshine law would have been violated...and "we didn't know"/"we forgot" is no safe harbor. Makes one wonder what happens when no one is watching.

Speaking of Scrooge...apparently the Mayor and BOA are having second thoughts about the "Bah Humbug" they first voiced in considering employee raises for 2010.

See a pattern? Manipulate commodity futures...get caught. Ignore meeting laws...get caught. Glad I can say I didn't vote Jerry. Mary...she is right there with him.

On the Sewage Spill deal, Can someone tell me where exactly the waste overflowed from?

Like the exact address and spot where the spill came from? I could take a look. Can you get access to the manhole cover where the spill came from or is it inside a fence? I can install a sensor in place with a buzzer at a nearby house or even make it trigger a revolving light or something at the station where people would notice it. I can even rig up something to automatically call someone if there is phone line and power available at the station or a phone line from a nearby residence.

Not that hard..would be maybe $100.00 worth of hardware tops. With no power and no phone, I can make it solar + battery powered alarm or light. Is there more than one place where this type overflow can happen? Is there a contact person at the City of KC for the station? Anyone know?

It would be a trivial thing to install. You could install the sensor (either mechanical float type or electronic conduction type sensor) down low enough in the manhole where you could have at least a little warning. It would be cheap and better than nothing.

Also noticed that outside 10 KW Natural Gas backup generators were $2000.00 at Costco. They were nice heavy duty GENERAC made units with a metal weatherproof housing. If someone knows the contact person for the city of KC, it would be cheap, easy backup power fix if the pumps are not 460V or something. Would just require a natural. gas line or a propane tank + electrician to install it.

Do not want anymore stuff spilling into the lake. I like to be able to go down there and swim and catch fish without worrying about things like that. I am sure the lake will handle the two spills we have had no problem - I mean think about what the Geese add in a years time but don't want anymore.

Your advice is sound and ideas are welcome. But don't worry...the Mayor and KC are talking. Again.

3:38 am.....all great ideas. Place to start would be George Lowman who can be reached at city hall (741-5545). He's the city engineer and the know-all about our infrastructure. Sounds like you can speak the speak so I recommend starting there.

Again the attitude previals WL should install preventive equipment on a KCMO owned facility

Thats kind of like our congress suggesting we pay for a missle defense system to protect Poland from Russia.

Act like a tool and you will get used.

Right... lets ask George

Apparently we cannot afford to give him a well deserved raise but we can afford to spend money to fix KCMOs pump station

You know, it seemed to me that 3:38 might be a newbie to the community, or at least unaware of the complicated nature of how we're organized. And most importantly willing to make some suggestions instead of just complaining.

Too bad you have to be so jaded.

Although I'm not a supporter of WL picking up the cost for what KC should be doing (or forced to do), I thank you for your suggestions, 3:38.

Thank You for my suggestions
How benevolent !

Which may be part of your problem by thanking people for dumping on you

I pay taxes to the City of Kansas City

I suppose you think someone that is sickened by some of my neighbors suggesting we pay to fix the problems of a huge entity like KCMO is jaded

We cant give our own employees raises and have to call for donations to keep the Community Center open

I guess you understand that new people would be outraged by that thinking and the people who have been here a while have gotten used to being used

I've been here a LOOOOOOOOOONG time too. I know the issues. But sometimes you have to bite the bullet before the $h*t hits the fan. Or in our case, the lake one more time.

By the way...I was applauding salient dialogue and propositions instead of trendy blogophite jabber w/ no actionable suggestions.

OK since you dont understand trendy blogophite jabber

The real problem is in between your ears

Suggestion: Ask your elected officials to provide solutions rather than provide excuses and make statements of appeasement

I thought dealing with public works issues was part of the job description for the Mayor .Heard any salient ideas from him besides lets all try and get along?
