Ohhh Say Can You See?

Rockets Red Glare
Bombs Bursting in Air

The early evening rains sent 4th of July celebrants scurrying for cover (and many home). We secured the patio furniture and watched the Lake clear of boats and C Point empty of party goers. Back home, jumped into take a nice warm shower and put on my bath robe and bunny slippers...when to my surprise...boom, boom bang! About 10PM. Yelled out to the family the fireworks were going, piled into the van and headed to Venita access, the closest viewing point from our house. Quite a few folks had the same idea as parking was tight and walkers were streaming in. Umbrellas and plastic sheet at the ready, we braved the wind and rain to watch the partially hidden display, clouds and smoke literally putting a damper on the proceedings. They finished with a whimper, but we did see fireworks right?

Who made the call to "light that candle"? Don't know. Some communities decided to cancel and re-do tonight, Leawood, Gladstone and Corporate Woods to name a few. We'll see if they were smarter, and luckier, than us this evening.

BTW-Farmer John says the rain gauge showed 2.24 inches of rain.

what if you had fireworks and nobody came?

I disagreed with the decision to go ahead last night. I would imagine a majority missed the fireworks they worked so hard to pay for. Don't know if tonight will be better or not but it does not seem it could get any worse than last night.

It does seem odd to me...this hole July 4th holiday here at WL this year. Starting with the July 4th parade being held on July 3rd all the way to the fireworks being held despite Severe Thunderstorm warnings, orders to clear the lake and pouring down rain. I am not sure who was responsible for it all but I, for one, was disappointed.

I agree, bad call. Worse yet, how would one know if they were on off or delayed. Guess we never had to think about it.

Check in with Tanya Finn to see who is responsible for this mess...my bet is she knows.

How much worse does it have to be to cancel?

Our grandson's baseball team has a rain out hot line...works like a charm

We had a rain date...why didn't we use it???

Guests left by 10pm. Grandson had come to take pics but said rain too much for camera. I thought communication was the key of this board. Sounds like a lack of it was in evidence....but then why should this be any different than sewage spills, cooperative agreements with KC, taking from storm water work to pave and then moan that paving isn't standing up.
Bad weather was just over the border in Kansas. Bad call, I'd say.

After a long day, children and grandchildren are tired at 10:15pm. It’s raining. Guests have gone home. Plans were made for all to come back the next night. The very, very few that venture out can’t see all the fireworks because they’re undercover. After the fireworks was over, dead silence across the lake because . . . there was no one there. My contribution to the fireworks fund was a total waste.

Anon 9:25pm...agreed. I am not sure I will give to the fund again. This was a waste of $12,000-$13,000.

Two blogfans mentioned the issue of seeing "10 Comments" but only three appear. Apparently this has happened elsewhere (a bug) and they resolve it...not sure when...so yes, there is a problem.

Anonymous 2:52pm - for what purpose?
To complain? Would it make a difference?
To hear some explanation? Would it make a difference?

Mike,

How convenient to have deleted a lot of comments you obviously did not want published.

You can go to the Blogspot forum to read about the Comment issue. It explains, in boring detail, a problem that has occurred on and off since April. This was the first post where I have had this issue. As I have mentioned many times, I have not altered, changed or deleted any comments during the approximately 700 posts. By the same token, what I have blogged has been on the record, so to speak. Comments like yours can and are made under the veil of anonymous. If you really want to take a shot, state your name, put on your big boy/big girl pants. If not, that is ok too. Either way, your comments will continue to be posted.

I blame George Bush and Cheney, not Tanya. If they hadn't stole the election none of this would have happened.

No I am sure its Obamas fault like all the other things Bush and Cheney did
