Last Sunday

I was out of town last Sunday and could not attend the gathering at Birmingham Park to support returning soldiers from Iraq. If you attended could you post your thoughts? See post of the 18th for comments on funds raised.

Sunday Sept. 21 was an ENORMOUS success! Over $7000 was raised to support our "adopted" troop from Ft. Riley. The Color Guard presented by The Buffalo Soldiers, which was arranged by Mr. Carlton Philpot was the highlight of the event. All of this was accomplished within 2 weeks from the time the idea for a fundraiser was brought up. Through VERY hard work and determination by a few residents (Tony & Pat White,Mike & Teresa Henderson, John & Sharon Bugg, Mike Jarrett & Pat Medill,George & Carol Regan, Marlin & Linda Cone, Glen & Patty Milkert,Dave & Debbie Folkedahl, Brian Stevenson and son Matt, Paul Stevenson & Kids, Rick Turpin, Rosie Hirni, Ron & De Surma and of course Don & Kathy Birmingham plus many others)this fundraiser is a credit to our community and the dedicated residents who call this wonderful lake home.
Although our ex-mayor committed WL to this project he did not follow through to accomplish our goals, and sadly did not participate in any of the efforts, after being asked. But Weatherby Lake's residents can be PROUD of their city for stepping up to the challenge and exceeding all expectations!!
Please, patronize the businesses that so generously supported this cause.
Ron & De Surma

Is the over $7000.00 going to be
divided among the 23 soldiers, or
is part going to the General Fund?

Anonymous said...

to our knowledge that decision will be up to Don Birmingham and Mayor Bos. Anonymous, what is your opinion on where all the money should go?

Too bad Ron had to turn his admirable effort sour by getting down in the gutter with petty politics

Im saddened that former Mayor York's administration's foresight into a good deed must still be colored in a negative light. Give me a break. Do you really not understand why he wouldn't participate? I think your comments demonstrate why it's a very tough row to hoe around here. Makes me grateful for anyone who's willing to step up to the plate. I sure wouldn't. Rest assured I'll be keeping a tally to determine how well Mayor Bos follows through on commitments during and after his tenure.

None will go to the General Fund. The people and businesses who generously donated intended it to go to the returning soldiers and that is how it should be.

I don't understand why anon 9/24 5:35pm has to automatically complain about Mayor Bos. If he personally starts somethinga and commits our community to it, I have a feeling he would follow through to assist with it. That is from only knowing him and his wife socially a few years. If York was the one to commit our community to this event then by all means he should have been the first to get involved. I wouldn't care what anybody else thought. A real man keeps up with his commitments. I also don't think it is petty politics to say that Mr. York didn't do anything. Whether he was mayor or not he made the commitment he should have followed through. I don't care if he was just a resident who lived here for 2 weeks!!

It would think this was about the soldiers not about who you like as our mayor

To: Sept 24 5:58. From: Sept 24 5:35.

You're right. Shame on me. Lesson learned. I'll think twice next time before I leap to the keyboard. Thanks for the reminder.

I was at the event, had a great feeling for all the effort, but dog gone it people, show some class...STOP making any good dead go unpunished.

No one can keep from these political jabs no matter what. Either acknowledge Mayor York for starting it and leave it without a personal jab again, or just leave him out of it. Can we keep it on the troops?

To everyone involved in that Spectacular Day, Thank you. It was worth any effort we provided just to see those smiles on Sunday.

To Former Mayor York, if you started this deal, thank you for the opportunity.

To Mayor Bos for keeping this the deal alive, thank you. You did make good on one of your campaign pledges to encourage "Meetings in the Park".

To the Surmas, Whites, Buggs, Hendersons, and all of the other folks involved, Thank you for your efforts.

For De Surma, Thank you for your leadership on the "Big Day".

To Weatherby Lakers, thank you for your generosity and more importantly your smiles and Great Conversation on that day.

Results-- Priceless--

The community came together. I heard from a long long time resident "This is what WL used to be like, it is great". --Priceless--

My British educated, Investment Banker son that has returned to WL to start a career search holding a Cat Fish Pole he won in the drawing-- Priceless.

To hear him describe the day to his London friends using terms like "One of the best days I have spent", "This is a great Community", "I have really missed this kind of day", "Now I know why I have returned to the U.S."-- Priceless--

So fellow Weather Lakers, my advice is to nurture the people who are willing to do the work, put forth the effort, and take the risk of failure so that hopefully we can be together again so we can all SMILE.

Finally, God Bless our Military guys/gals and hopefully they can get a little bit of joy from the Weatherby Lake generosity.

Best wishes to all,

Brian Stevenson

Politics were not brought into my comments. Just responsibility. If you commit to do something, followw through. And please don't give someone credit when there is none due. By the way, anyone who has to sign as Anonymous must have something to hide.

Anonymous postings allow one to speak freely and to say what many are afraid to say without enduring repercussions, judgments, or retributions. Thank you Mike for creating something that allows opinions, venting frustrations, and a for the information it provides.

I agree and prefer the anonymity to the animosity.

I have found a particular active member of our community artificial, somewhat deceitful and with a personal agenda. Next reelection, this forum helps discuss the candidates and their actions in a cloak of anonymity, with no personal backlash.

I would love to know how is being "deceitfull" I think we should discuss things freely on this blog so since you signed in anonymously why not finish your thought???

Brian Stevenson always has something positive and constructive to say. Possibly his sister, who was already on city council, may have affected the voting numbers. Maybe Pat White will consider stepping down next election and giving her brother a turn. We can use all the positivity we can get.

Shame on Ron Surma for his negative commment about Mayor York. Kudos to Ron Surma for not saying it in an anonymous posting. Catch 22.

To you who said " Next reelection, this forum helps discuss the candidates and their actions in a cloak of anonymity, with no personal backlash."

In contrast I am frankly more concerned that a few of our more "active" members actions go unchalleged due to a well founded fear of backlash.

Too bad good smart people who we need are staying on the sidelines afraid to stand up to them because they are afraid to be targeted with another famous (shoot your self and your community in the foot) 9.9 horsepower slow boat campaign.

You are right Anonymous 10:21am. The problem is fear of backlash stems from a perception you're the only one who feels that way. If someone thinks an active member of the community integrity is in question, then hopefully others will speak up.
