East Side Alderman Spot

What happens now? Nobody filed for the seat up for election (White). The following is from Mary Beth Erickson, Platte County Board of Elections:
  • A candidate may run as a "write-in".
  • There is no requirement to file with the election board although one may.
  • If less than $1000 is spent by the candidate there is not a requirement to form/file an election committee with reports to the board.
  • The board counts each write-in ballot, variations of name could disqualify a vote, for instance, Thomas A. Doe, Tom Doe, T. Doe, Doe could be written in...Thomas A. Doe and Tom Doe would likely qualify, T. Doe or Doe probably not.

I won't go into the scenario if no write-ins occur, my guess is at least one qualified vote, other than Mickey Mouse will be received. Should be very interesting. As Bill O'Reilly says...East Siders "what say you?".

I think that it is a shame that no one stepped forward for the council seat on East Side. Why does the group think that no one filed?

Why didn't you file Brian?

This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage a respected friend or neighbor to consider running for the East Ward position. Someone who wouldn’t have to deal with the politics or costs of running for the office. It would only take a very small group of people to support someone they feel would be ideal for the job and simply write their name on the ballot. I think this could open up a whole new direction.

For 7:38 am, I respect your post. But to be honest with you, "encouraging a respected friend or neighbor to consider running" is much like encouraging a respected friend or neighbor to hang a concrete block around their neck and take them to the center of the lake!! I for one, like my friends much more than that!!

I am sure that none of WL's have to worry. Meetings will be held and the true followers of this site will find a canidate they approve and have enough support of the "Citizens for a Better Government" to get their person elected.

You're right to a degree 5:51. But I have never seen Vic DeJong or Tanya Finn personally trampled on this website. Let's face it, Jerry Bos has some issues and Mary Hoy has put herself back in the firing range - have to admire her for that. So, I wouldn't automatically assume the next East Ward alderman will be up for execution.

Perhaps we should consider a similar survey for Weatherby Lake.

From the Platte County Citizen newspaper:

"Parkville agrees to survey citizens"...."after a work session prior to the Parkville Board of Aldermen meeting Jan. 20, the Board moved forward with plans to conduct a citizens satisfaction survey in upcoming months...........

The article goes on to say it will be phone and mail for $12K, but having been involved in hundreds of surveys for business, our community could get by rather cheaply for a online survey. Might be money well spent to definitively determine where the community's priorities and satisfaction lie.

Hey folks, I just wanted to put to rest any questions you may have for why I decided not to file for a second term. I see there has been a lot of speculation and I can tell you that there are some very personal reasons why I did not file that I would ask you to respect as being private. There are some others as well that I do not mind sharing. My husband retired last year in August. The two of us have many things we want to do including helping with activities around this community. We also plan to take part in several Cobra Car Club events that will often take us out of town.

I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to learn more about the issues with this city and to have had a chance to meet many new people here at the lake. It was disappointing to me that no one else filed to represent the East Side. I would encourage anyone here at the lake to seriously consider filling this position as it really does help one to understand the complexities and challenges that our board deals with on a continual basis.

Before I close this out I would tell you that your current board are fine people…all of them. They put in a lot of hours out of their personal lives to serve this city in the best way they feel they can. I remember just after I was elected Mayor York said to me, “the campaigning was easy, now the hard work begins”. He was right about that. It is not easy and you can never please everyone with your decisions. All you can do is your best and with that will come the critics. That is the job.

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions that were not addressed here.

For those that are very critical about the negative impact of this blog, i just noticed that O-Cove has silt fencing up.

I think that was something that Mike mentioned a couple of weeks ago. So it can't be all bad.

Perhaps rumblings here made it to some WLIC ears.

Well done!

Thank you Pat for your great response. With a bit of luck, maybe it will heal some of the hard feelings.

6:55AM GREAT IDEA !!! It would only cost $200 to $300 to send out postcards and ask people to return them - check off their wants and needs and/or opinions and/or and priorities on the various issues.

Thank you Pat White for your service to this commmunity. Some of us do realize that you volunteered your time and talent to help guide WL. I, for one, beleive you did a great job as East Side Alderman.

For those who do not Pat White did a great job, now is your time to step up and file. Otherwise, sit back down and figure out who you will be critical of next.

Put more bluntly, put up or shut up!!

I have no hard feelings...never did. As I said, I think serving on the board was a great experience and would encourage others to do it in the future. Thank you for the compliments and feedback. I appreciate it.
